This issue of the North Parker highlights some of our "masters in mentoring," exceptional alumni whose contributions are invaluable to both students and fellow graduates. The Winter 2014 North Parker celebrates this sort of "academic alchemy" that develops, taking a closer look at six unique professor-student pairings within our academic environment. The issue also highlights exciting new developments happening on campus, offers a recap of various Homecoming festivities, and pays tribute to two leaders—former College and Seminary president Dr. Lloyd Ahlem and Seminary professor Richard Carlson—who passed away earlier this year.

Journey across Africa with us in this North Parker as we explore connections alumni and friends have cultivated with communities in the world's second largest continent. Hear from Amy Russell C'10, who is traversing more than 7,000 miles on foot across the continent as an advocate for clean water access; Spark Ventures, a Chicago-based nonprofit working closely with Zambian communities; and North Parkers working for the empowerment of women in Kenya. We also pause to celebrate the achievements of our graduating class, note the exciting addition of several new academic programs and majors, and honor the late Jimmie R. North Park custodian Ivan Hadzhiminov painted his first icon in secret in Bulgaria, but now paints and donates them freely in Chicago. Willow Creek Community Church's weekend worship is led by a team of North Park alumni. Looking through the eyes of alumni with personal ties to Haiti, we feel the continuing pain of the tragic January 2010 earthquake. "Chicago is our classroom, and all Chicagoans are our teachers," is a familiar maxim at North Park. This edition examines how the University exemplifies this through a lasting relationship with a local elementary school, a study partnership with Rush University Medical Center, and by providing adult learners with a first-class educational opportunity. What's more, initiatives like Global Partnerships are extending North Park's classroom to all corners of the world.

North Park's Campus Theme Program, asking the question Who's life is it, anyway?, challenged students in a variety of ways this year. An essay by professor Mary Adams Trujillo challenges North Parker readers to consider the possibilities present in conflict. Profiles of several creative alumni, including two textile artists, two musicians, and a professor of neonatology, examine how others are confronting this question in their professional endeavors.
