SAL Facts at a Glance
Established in 1992, the School of Adult Learning (SAL) is North Park University’s bachelor’s degree completion program, designed for professionals who have at least 12 hours of transferrable college credit and wish to complete their degree while continuing to work full-time. Seven-week courses that meet just once a week allow you to finish your bachelor's degree on a part-time basis in about the same amount of time that it would take you to attend full-time during the day. SAL students complete their bachelor’s degree to advance their career, increase their earning potential, and to achieve a lifelong goal.
Who are SAL students?
SAL students are just like you! While they come from a wide array of professional and personal backgrounds, all have some college experience and possess a common goal: to finish their bachelor’s degree. Nearly 65% of SAL students are women, and 40% are people of color. The average age is 32, and most are enrolled part-time.
What is the average class size?
The average class size is just 16 students, which means you’ll receive a high degree of personal attention from faculty.
What degrees and majors can you pursue?
SAL students pursue one of two degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of General Studies
Both are liberal arts bachelor's degrees, and both are fully accredited and equally valuable in today's job market. The degree that is best for you will depend upon your previous academic history, current interests, and career goals. When you apply to SAL, we will help you compare and make an informed decision about your academic goals.
You may choose from eight majors to focus on, as well as several minors and certificates.
Where can you take courses?
The School of Adult Learning offers two convenient locations: the main campus on Chicago’s north side, and at the University Center of Lake County, in Grayslake. Free parking is available at both locations. Selected courses are also offered online.
When are courses offered?
SAL courses are seven weeks long meet once a week for four hours, either on weeknights (6:00 – 9:50 p.m.) or on Saturday mornings (8:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.). There are six terms per year.
When can you begin courses?
Most students begin courses in August, January, or May, but under certain circumstances, you may start in October, March, or July.
How long will it take to finish your degree?
Most students finish their degree in about 2½ years, depending on transfer credit. In general, you will be able to finish your degree on a part-time basis in about the same amount of time that it would take if you have attended courses full-time during the day.
