Vocal Ensembles

University Choir
This select group of experienced choristers, determined by audition, performs a varied repertoire of sacred and secular music. Emphasis is placed on performance, with major appearances throughout the year, both on- and off- campus, and periodic national and foreign tours. Open to music majors and non-music majors by audition.

Gospel Choir
Stephen Kelly and Felicia Coleman-Evans, directors. Open to all singers, the Gospel Choir performs contemporary sacred music from the spiritual and gospel genres. A select ensemble of singers, drawn from the choir by audition, serve as a touring ensemble for the group. Performance opportunities include concerts, chapel services, and worship services at local churches. Open to music majors and non-music majors; no audition is required.

Women’s Chorale
This ensemble of women vocalists performs a wide variety of music, including folk, popular, and religious songs; selections from cantatas; and classical pieces in Latin and French. The repertory is often enhanced with obbligato instruments. Open to music majors and non-music majors by audition.

Chamber Singers
Wayland Rogers, director. The Chamber Singers are a small (8-16), select group of singers (both undergraduate and graduate), chosen by audition, that specializes in Renaissance and Baroque music while including music of many styles and periods. Multiple performances are presented both on- and off- campus every year, and major tours are scheduled every second or third year. Open to music majors and non-music majors by audition.

Opera Workshop
Opera Workshop provides training in the techniques of the singer/actor, emphasizing movement, character analysis, and ways in which music offers clues to stage action. Performances include annual scene recitals, and full operas, alternating annually with orchestra and/or with piano accompaniment, giving breadth to the operatic experience. Past productions have included The Marriage of Figaro, Gianni Schicchi/The Medium, and Dialogues of the Carmelites, as well as scenes of wide period and stylistic variety. Open to music majors and non-majors by audition.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble
Student Led. Started by a few students about six years ago, the vocal jazz ensemble is still completely student led and directed. Open to music majors and non-music majors by audition.
