Karla Fogel

Associate Professor of Nursing

At North Park since: 1982

Karla Fogel teaches at North Park for many reasons: the lifelong friendships she has developed with faculty, staff, and students; her strong ties to the Evangelical Covenant Church, and a belief in the high quality education that North Park delivers to nursing students. “The School of Nursing has an excellent reputation in the area hospitals and healthcare institutions,” she says. “Our graduates are highly respected and we hear positive feedback about them all the time.”

Dr. Fogel has maintained a clinical nursing practice for 35 years, which helps her stay in touch with current issues in the healthcare field. She regularly includes discussions of healthcare ethics in her teaching, clinical, and research experiences. Her Healthcare Ethics class explores the relationships of values and moral reasoning, and she has created opportunities for her students to learn first-hand more about how health care institutions handle ethical issues. For example, her ethics students attend an Institutional Ethics Committee meeting at NorthShore University Health System, where Dr. Fogel has participated in clinical ethics consultations for 15 years, to get real-world insights into how the health profession addresses ethical issues in patient care.

Her academic research has focused on moral distress in critical care nurses, specifically examining the relationships of the ethical climate of the intensive care unit and hospital with the likelihood of nurses leaving a position, the hospital, or the nursing profession.

Along with her Clinical Nursing class, which introduces students to the integration of spiritual needs with physical needs in patient assessment and caring, her ethics courses have also provided a way for her to incorporate faith into the curriculum. “These complex and interesting topics allow opportunities to share many views and open dialog on diversity and knowledge of faith in self and others,” she says.

Dr. Fogel is a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, and Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity.
