Student Resources
What do can we do with a sociology degree?
A great many things, as it turns out. Among a few of the vocations that sociology students have pursued are:
- Social services – social work, rehabilitation, recreational administration and work with the elderly
- Community Work – Community organizing (Barak Obama did this! And see where it got him!), Nonprofit management or environmental groups
- Law Enforcement and Corrections – Police work, probation or criminal justice.
- Human Resource Development – Personnel work and organizational development.
- Advertising and Marketing – marketing and consumer research
- Teaching – Sociology is a concentration or even a major for teacher certification.
- Research – Research in social service, client satisfaction surveys and evaluation research
- Ministry – Youth ministry and preparation for seminaries
- Preparation for graduate school
An excellent resource research in these areas, and for further reading can be found at the American Sociological Association website Careers in Sociology . A related publication, 21st Century Careers with an Undergraduate Degree in Sociology is currently available only in print form. Single copies are free, even though the website shows a $1.00 cost.
