Curriculum
Women’s and Gender Studies is a discipline based in feminist, gender, and queer theories. The course offerings take several complementary approaches to understanding gender.
We know that gender cannot be separated from other aspects of individual and cultural identity, so we study it as part of a matrix of race, class, sexuality, age, ability, culture, and religion.
We consider gender at the micro, meso, macro, and global levels of society:
- Micro—one’s individual identity
- Meso—close relationships, families, and communities
- Macro—U.S. society, including politics, religion, economics, education and other social systems
- Global—other cultures worldwide whose understandings of gender are both similar and different from those in the U.S.
We study gender from both historical and contemporary perspectives, including the women’s movements during the 19th and 20th centuries in the U.S., as well as the multiple points of view on feminism and gender in contemporary culture.
