John Hjelm

Professor of Exercise and Sport

At North Park since: 1977

Although John Hjelm has taught exercise science at North Park University for more than three decades, his dual passion for teaching and health often has taken his students off campus—to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for cross-country skiing and to Ontario, Canada for a canoe trip—to learn more about exercise, fitness, and health.

“These activities provide opportunities for students to learn in new and different environments,” he says. “I believe North Park makes a difference in the lives of its students. I love the opportunity to play a role in their development.”

The dedicated and creative professor is also an alumnus of North Park along with several other members of his family. “As a third-generation alumnus of North Park, the University holds a special place in my life and the life of my family,” he says. “It was, and is, a place whose values resonate within my own life.”

Professor Hjelm’s research focuses on the dimensions of health and fitness assessment. He is a member of American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance; Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance; American College of Sports Medicine; and American Association for Health Education.
