Meal Plan Policy
All students living in a residence hall are required to be on a meal plan. The only circumstance under which a student will be released from this requirement is if he or she is on a medically required diet that the manager of ARA has determined he/she is unable to accommodate.
Process for Seeking an Exemption from the Meal Plan Requirement.
- The student provides a letter to the manager of ARA from his or her physician. The letter should include the medical condition which necessitates the special diet, the specifics of the diet, and an indication of any testing that has been done to verify the condition.
- Upon receiving the letter from a physician, the student brings the letter to the manager of ARA for him/her to determine if the diet is able to be accommodated. If he/she is able to accommodate the diet, no release from the meal plan will be granted.
- In a case where the ARA manager believes more information is needed, or he/she is unable to accommodate the diet, he/she will discuss the case with the Director of Residence Life and Housing. At that point, the Director of Residence Life and Housing will ask the student to get the necessary information or possibly to sign a release with the physician allowing the physician to speak with a representative of the University. A final determination will be made when all information has been received.
Stipulations
- Verification from a physician is required each year a student requests an exemption from the meal plan.
- The University reserves the right to require the student to see a physician of the University’s choice for verification.
- Vegetarian/vegan diets are considered a lifestyle and dietary choice and will not be considered for an exemption.
