Trustee Award
The Trustee Award recognizes exceptional future North Park University students and is accompanied by a four-year scholarship of $5,000 per year while you complete your undergraduate studies at North Park. It is awarded in addition to other academic scholarships and grants given by North Park.
Eligibility Criteria
You must be admitted to North Park University to be invited to compete for a Trustee Award. If you have received the Nyvall Scholarship, you are automatically eligible to register to compete for a Trustee Award and will receive an invitation. Selected recipients of the Presidential Scholarship will also receive an invitation to register and participate in the Trustee Award Competition.
Competition weekends are limited in capacity, and we will close registration as they fill. Register early, since we don't want you to be disappointed.
Deadlines and timeline
- Apply for admission to the University immediately.
- Eligible students will receive a competition invitation in late November or December with a link to register.
- You must register for a specific competition weekend. Competition dates and registration information for 2013 scholarships will be available in June 2012.
Trustee Competition Weekends
Invited students may register and participate in one Trustee Award Competition event. The Trustee Competition weekends for students matriculating at North Park in the fall of 2013 will be announced during the summer.
Competition events begin at 6:00 pm on Friday and continue until 4:00 pm on Saturday. Check-in will take place at Old Main (at 3225 West Foster Avenue) on Friday evening.
We will give all participants a credit on their first bill for documented travel expenses up to $300 for the weekend if you matriculate at North Park the same fall. (You will receive complete details about this offer in your registration confirmation packet.)
Parents Welcome
We invite the parents of participants to attend the welcome reception at 6:00 on Friday evening and join us afterward for a special parents' activity. On Saturday morning you have the option of a brunch hosted by North Park, along with the opportunity to tour campus.
Parents are responsible for their own housing. See a few of our suggestions among the vast array of hotel options in Chicago and nearby.
Special Instructions
- Invited students may register for any weekend as space is available.
- Capacity is limited and first come, first served. We will close registration as capacity is reached.
- Please eat supper Friday evening prior to checking in at Old Main.
- North Park offers airport or train-station pick-up and return.
Competition Format
- You will join other students competing for the Trustee Award in attending a special event on Friday night. You will stay in a North Park residence hall with one of our currents students as your host.
- On Saturday, your group will experience an instructional or creative event (such as a play or lecture). You will then be asked to complete a writing assignment in response to that experience.
- On Saturday afternoon, you will participate in a structured interview with North Park faculty. The interview format will be described at the start of the interviews.
You do not need to do anything to prepare for this competition. Just come ready to be challenged and enjoy yourself!
Evaluation
Your writing and your engagement with your peers and North Park faculty and staff will provide a picture of you as a person, a scholar, and a future North Park student.
We are looking for students who are talented, resourceful, and adventurous; who give evidence of authenticity and compassion; and who demonstrate the capacity to reflect and respect the work of others. In short, we are looking for students who can successfully take advantage of the exceptional educational opportunities offered at North Park University.
Announcement of Recipients
The recipients of the Trustee Award will be announced approximately two weeks after the last competition weekend. Recipients will have until May 1 to accept an offered award. If declined, their award may be offered to another student. Students must matriculate as first-year students the same fall. The award cannot be deferred.
It is University policy that the total amount of North Park academic scholarships and grants (institutional aid that does not need to be paid back) cannot exceed the amount of tuition. Therefore, students who are granted tuition remission or tuition exchange are welcome to participate in the competition event, but any financial benefits of this award would be subject to this limitation.
