Nursing 5005 Scholarly Communication

Print Sources:

The easiest way to start finding books is to search the library catalog.  You can also find the print journals the library subscribes to, as well as DVDs and magazines, in the catalog.

Often a subject search will give you more focused information on a topic.  To perform a subject search, type a word into the catalog and then select "Subject" in the box to the right.  Get help searching the catalog.

Most nursing and other medical books are located in the "R" section.  The "R" books that may be checked out of the library are on the east side of the second floor.  Reference books are on the first floor of the library.

Finding Database Articles:

Begin by searching the nursing databases.  You can find them by clicking on Databases and Online Resources and then clicking nursing.

  • CINAHL indexes over 2800 nursing journals and is a great source for nursing and medical research.  Need better instructions about how to search CINAHL?
  • Proquest Nursing Journals offers the full-text of over 250 nursing journals.  Click here for help searching Proquest Nursing Journals.
  • OVID Nursing is a database of over 50 full-text nursing journals.
  • The Nursing Reference Center is an evidence-based medicine database that offers point-of-care info about drugs, diseases, conditions, and patient education.  Click here for more information.
  • Medline is another great medical index.  You might want to search this with "nursing" as one of your search terms, as the database also covers dentistry and veterinary medicine, among others.

Note: If you see the "find full text" box, it does not mean that the article is full-text in that database.  Click on the box to find out if the NPU or other Illinois libraries own the journal, or if it is full-text in another database.  It will also allow you to click on interlibrary loan.  Just fill in your information and we will contact you when your article arrives.
