Borrowing Policies

The primary goal of the library is to support the curricular and research needs of North Park students, faculty, and staff. As resources permit, services also are provided to alumni, members of the cooperative networks, and clergy. Library staff reserves the right to terminate the privileges of those who abuse them.

Access and Borrowing Privileges

In order to check out library material you must have and present one of the following forms of identification:

  • A current North Park ID
  • A current ID at a partner School 
  • An valid ACTS card from a local seminary
  • A Brandel library guest card

The following people are eligible to apply for a guest card: NPU alumni, Covenant office staff, Swedish Covenant Hospital staff, and local clergy. Others may purchase a one year guest card for $200.00.

Renewals

Books and Curriculum may be renewed 3 times. Audio-visual items may be renewed once.

Limits

Patrons using guest cards are limited to taking 10 books at a time from the library. There is a 6 item limit on Audio Visual material for all patrons.

Circulation of Other Collections

Reference Collection

These resources do not circulate out of the library. Exceptions may be made with the permission of one of the librarians for limited time out of the library.

Serials Collection

These materials do not circulate out of the library. Exceptions may be made with the permission of one of the librarians for limited time out of the library.

Curriculum Collection

Most Curriculum Center items only circulate to NPU students, faculty, and staff. A few items in the Curriculum Center are reference items and they do not circulate.

Archives

Archives and Special Collections do not circulate to anyone. Materials are accessible through the Director of Archives and Special Collections.

Class and Permanent Reserves

Class reserve material only circulates to NPU students and staff. The circulation periods are:

  • Library use only. (Two hour circulation, but never leave the library.)
  • 3 Hour. (Materials may be used for 3 hours or taken out three or less hours before closing, due the next morning.)
  • Twenty-four hour. (Materials due the same hour on the following day.) 
  • Three and seven day. (Materials due by closing hour of third or seventh day from date of check out.)
  • Media Permanent Reserve (Media items with red spine labels only circulate to faculty).

Recalls

A "recalled" item is one that is out of the library on loan but is needed back for a special reason. Almost all recalls are needed for class reserves. A borrower will be notified of the recall and a new due date will be assigned. Fines will accrue from the new due date and the item will not be eligible for renewal.

Material Returns

All materials are due by 12 o’clock midnight on the due date, except for reserve items that are due by the specified date and hour. All materials are to be returned to the circulation department. Materials that will not be damaged may be returned to a book drop. An inside book drop is provided at the circulation desk for quick and easy drop-offs. An outside book drop is provided for materials returned after library hours. The outside book drop is emptied once a day, soon after the library opens.

Fine Policy

A late fee will be charged for all items returned after their due date. The fees are as follows:

  • Books & Curriculum $.25 per day late
  • Audio-visual items $1.00 per day late
  • Laptops $.10 per minute late
  • Reserve items $.05 per minute late

Any item 60 days overdue will be considered lost and the patron will be billed for the cost of the item plus a $15 processing fee. North Park faculty and staff are not charged late fees but may be responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged materials.

Students with $30.00 or more in unpaid fines will not be allowed to check out library material until the fines are paid. Patrons with guest cards will not be allowed to check out material if they have $7.50 or more in unpaid library fines.
