Axelson Center Presents Three Awards to Chicago-Area Nonprofits

Axelson Center Award Winners

Fall 2013

The prestigious Alford-Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence was presented at the 14th Annual Symposium in June to Concordia Place (larger than a $3 million budget) and Between Friends (under $3 million budget). The winning organizations each received a $7,500 cash award. This award honors and continues the legacies of Nils G. Axelson, a devoted community health care leader and visionary, and Jimmie R. Alford, a leading contemporary thinker and practitioner in the nonprofit arena. Each applicant organization was evaluated in a two-part process using the Hallmarks of Managerial Excellence (a tool for assessing an organization's management and leadership excellence). Through practice and performance, the winning organizations exhibit such features of effective and excellent management as:

*    Clear, compelling, and well-communicated, mission and vision

*    Coherent organizational strategy that aligns programs and services to mission and goals

*    Strong and effective leadership by staff and board

*    Solid financial management

*    Diversified funding

*    Well-developed fundraising and external relations program

*    Strong sense of integrity throughout organization's culture

*    Shared sense of purpose and values within organization and among key external constituents

*    Process in place for evaluating organizational performance

In addition, the Excellent Emerging Organization Award was presented to Porchlight Counseling Services. This award honors up-and-coming organizations, who exhibit current and future leadership in the sector. The winning organization displayed sound management practices, innovation in programming and leadership capabilities and a demonstrated commitment to excellence and learning. This year's award package included a customized set of services from Executive Service Corps, The Law Project, Community Media Workshop, creation of a short promotional video by Gretchen Hasse, one year membership to Donors Forum, a 12-month donor software subscription from DonorPath, professional development resources from the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management and a $2,500 cash award.

Congratulations to this year's award winners!
