President urges graduates 'to give to others as you have been given'

CHICAGO (December 19, 2011) – Degrees were awarded Dec. 16 to 192 North Park University graduates at the University's Winter Commencement ceremonies held in the North Park Gymnasium. For the first time ever, the event was webcast live on the University website.

Bachelor's degrees were presented to 111 students representing a variety of undergraduate majors including the School of Adult Learning. Master's degrees were presented to 81 students representing the School of Business and Nonprofit Management, School of Education, School of Nursing and North Park Theological Seminary.

In his charge to the graduates, the president of North Park University, Dr. David Parkyn, highlighted Advent, the season of the Christian Church year which precedes Christmas, and the story of John the Baptist, whose earthly calling was to prepare people for the coming of Jesus Christ. When people asked John how they should prepare for the coming of the Lord, he responded by telling them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise" (Luke 3:10-11).

Focusing on John's example, Parkyn urged the graduates "to live with significance, to live in service" and be generous to others. "You are privileged because you now are among those in this world who have had the opportunity to attend college," he said. "As a graduate of college you have much which you can now share with others. The privilege of attending and graduating from college carries with it responsibility. Even as the opportunity to attend college has enriched your life, so now you have the obligation to take your own enriched life, and through it, enrich others -- to give to others even as you have been given."

The commencement ceremony included prayers, hymns, the University's graduation litany and presentation of degrees by University deans. In addition to parents, relatives and friends who attended the ceremony, webcast viewers totaled 371 separate connections.

Reflecting North Park University's multicultural community, the processional featured flags of countries and territories in which graduates were born, are citizens or have been residents. The flags included those of the United States, plus Bulgaria, People's Republic of China, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Jamaica, Myanmar (Burma), Nigeria, Poland, South Korea, Sweden and Turkey. The program ended with a benediction from Numbers 6:24-26, read by graduates in six languages including Bulgarian, English, Igbo, Polish, Spanish and Swedish.
