Men's soccer team victorious over Augustana College; football and women's soccer teams lose tough games

CHICAGO (October 16, 2011) — The North Park men’s soccer team earned a 3–1 win in front of a raucous Homecoming crowd over Augustana College in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action Friday night.

The victory was North Park’s fourth straight and the team's second over Augustana in the last three meetings. North Park out-shot their rival Vikings 14 to 12, including 5 to 4 on goal.

North Park took control of the game in the minute thirteen when freshman sensation Jonas Pettersson took an assist from senior Kris Grahn and lofted the ball over the goalkeeper’s hands in the bottom right corner of the net. The Vikings then struck again in the twentieth minute when Pettersson took another Grahn assist and nearly created a mirror image of the first goal as he again bounced the ball in the left side of the net past Augustana's goalie.

Augustana wouldn’t be denied, though, as they brought the game within a goal fifteen minutes before halftime; their leading goal scorer, Sean Fidlow, found the back of the net off an assist from John McSpadden. But North Park would finish off the scoring early in the second half when freshman Fredrik Greiff scored his first collegiate goal in the fifty-third minute on an assist from sophomore Robin Hals.

North Park junior keeper Tim Ahlberg played all 90 minutes of the game and made three saves, earning his eighth win of the season.

The Lady Vikings soccer team also faced Augustana College during Homecoming weekend. They fell 3–0 on Saturday night, despite 10 shots during the game and freshman goalkeeper Katie Ibarra's seven saves. This tied her career high saves in a single game; she played all 90 minutes of the match.

The football team faced CCIW rival Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon, losing 28–0. Junior Matt Hassan and senior Mark Howard put in strong individual performances in the hard-fought game. Hassan tallied 105 yards rushing on 15 carries. Howard collected 229 yards punting, for an average of 45.8 yards per punt with one touchback. Senior Sam Cochiarao returned four kickoffs for 57 total yards.
