Three Faculty Installed in Endowed Chairs


CHICAGO, IL (October 11, 2010) – Faculty members Ilsup Ahn, Julia Lynn Davids and Linda Duncan were installed to Endowed Chairs during the fall Academic Convocation. Their accomplishments were recognized, and a litany of installation commended them to dignify their appointments with “wisdom, leadership, devotion, and godliness.”

Carl I. Lindberg Endowed Chair in Applied Ethics

Convocation 2010Ilsup Ahn was installed as the Carl I. Lindberg Endowed Chair in Applied Ethics. The chair was given in honor of Rev. Carl I. Lindberg, father of Marge Sveen, by the Don and Marge Sveen family. The Sveens are members of Glen Ellyn Covenant Church, and Don has served on the North Park University Board of Trustees.

Dr. Ahn, Associate Professor of Philosophy, earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago and a M.Div. and Master of Theology magna cum laude from Emory University. He served as a pastor in the United Methodist Church in Cedarville and Orland Park, Illinois, and was Campus Minister at UIC from 1999-2001. He is the author of a book and numerous journal articles in the areas of ethics, human rights and Asian studies.

Stephen J. Hendrickson Endowed Chair in Music

Julia Lynn DavidsJulia Lynn Davids was installed to the Stephen J. Hendrickson Endowed Chair in Music. Stephen Hendrickson founded Christian Book Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of Christian products. He served as a North Park Board of Trustees member from 1992-1999 and 2000-2005 and was Chair of the National Campaign Committee for North Park’s last capital campaign.

Dr. Davids, Assistant Professor of Music, came to North Park this fall. She has extensive experience in choral conducting, church music and solo vocal performance. Her Doctor of Music in Choral Conducting was earned at Northwestern University, and she holds a Masters in Voice Performance as well as Choral Conducting from the University of Michigan.

Gretchen Carlson Memorial Chair in Nursing

Linda R. Duncan was installed to the Gretchen Carlson Memorial Chair in Nursing, previously held by Dr. Louise Hedstrom, who retired in 2005. Gretchen Carlson attended North Park College for one year, graduating from the Swedish Covenant Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She died in 1986 after 23 years of profound disability, including blindness. Her three children all attended North Park College.

Dr. Duncan, Professor of Nursing, earned her terminal degree from Rush University, and received her Master of Science in Nursing from Loyola University. She graduated from the North Park College School of Nursing in 1969, and has taught nursing at North Park since 1973. Duncan is the author of many scholarly articles in addition to her vast clinical and teaching experience.
