NPU Voice Teacher Deployed to Iraq
CHICAGO, IL (January 30, 2007) – Petty Officer 2nd Class Ronald Watkins is a naval reservist and an active member of the Chicago music community, including positions with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Evanston’s Lake Street Church, and North Park University. For the next year or so, however, all of his energies will be focused on the former role, as he begins a military tour of duty in Iraq, "somewhere near Fallujah."
Friday’s Chicago Tribune
covered Watkins and his upcoming departure in great detail, beginning with his enlistment six years ago and including his recent preparations for this week’s departure. To read the complete article, click here
Watkins is an adjunct member of the voice faculty at North Park’s School of Music. The supervisor of the Master of Music in Vocal Performance major, Dr. Karen Bauer, had this to say about Watkins: "[Ron] is well liked by both faculty and students…We are all saddened to hear of his recall to Iraq and will miss him. We will keep him and his family in our prayers and will look forward to his return to regular duties here in the School of Music in one year’s time. Oh that he could bring a little harmony to that war-torn country!"
Senior Aubrey Campbell has studied voice under Watkins for two and a half years and no doubt speaks for many North Park School of Music students when she shares, "Through our lessons, Ron has not only shared his knowledge of music with me, but also how it is that his passion for music extends into his faith. I pray for protection for him while he is in Iraq and hope for his safe return."
