Alumnus Appointed as Interim Dean at UIC

CHICAGO, IL (July 3, 2007) - North Park alumnus Peter Nelson C’84, who has been Head of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), has been appointed as Interim Dean of the College of Engineering, effective August 1, 2007. A search committee also will be appointed to perform a national search for a permanent Dean, who should be in place by August 2008.

Nelson joined UIC’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1988 as an assistant professor and was later promoted to associate and full professor. In 2001, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was split into the departments of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Dr. Nelson has served as Head of the Department of Computer Science since that time. In 1991 Dr. Nelson founded the UIC Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory, which specializes in applied AI research and development and has undertaken a variety of applied intelligent systems projects in the areas of transportation, molecular biology, electronics manufacturing optimization, and networking.

Dr. Nelson received his B.A. in Computer Science and mathematics from North Park College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Northwestern University. His research focuses on developing efficient artificial intelligence search techniques, and he has been the recipient of over $15 million in research grants and contracts from a wide variety of government agencies, and corporations including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Academy of Sciences, Federal Highway Administration, Illinois Department of Transportation, Manufacturing Research Center, Motorola, and Sun Microsystems.
