North Park Celebrates Swedish Midsummer Festival
CHICAGO (June 22, 2008) – On Saturday, June 21, North Park joined other Swedish communities around the world in celebrating the Midsummer Festival. The festivities began at 1:00 with the opening of the marketplace which included booths from the Swedish American Museum, Tre Kronor Restaurant, Aramark, North Park University, the Swedish-American Historical Society, the Center for Scandinavian Studies, North Park University Bookstore, Wreath Making, Face Painting and a Midsummer Raffle. Honorary Consul General of Sweden Kerstin Lane greeted the crowd with a warm greeting of “God dag & Välkommen to Midsommardagen” translated to mean “Good Day and Welcome to Midsummer.” The welcome was followed by the traditional dances around the Maypole led by Linda Muhr of the Nordic Dancers of Chicago.
The afternoon was highlighted by performances by the Nordic Dancers, Nordic Voices of Chicago, a Scandinavian Women’s Choir directed by North Park alum Melissa Grant, and Chicago Spelmanslag.
Midsummer Fest was sponsored by North Park’s Center for Scandinavian Studies, which provides various academic and cultural events linking those with Scandinavian roots to their heritage. The director of the Center is Dr. Charles Peterson, Dean of the College, and he is assisted by Maiken Sparshott.
