North Park Theological Seminary Student Awarded Fellowship
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. (March 26, 2008) – North Park Theological Seminary student Sara C. Carlson has been awarded a Summer Fellowship by The Beatitudes Society. She will be serving at United Religions Initiative in San Francisco, Calif.
Carlson is a part of the 2008 class of 20 summer fellows, who will serve as interns at social change organizations in Washington D.C., the San Francisco Bay Area, and Chicago. From June 9 to August 1 they will work full-time at their agencies and also participate in weekly theological reflection sessions facilitated by a local mentor. The students have been awarded a cash stipend by The Beatitudes Society to cover summer living expenses.
The Beatitudes Society develops and sustains emerging Christian leaders at seminaries and divinity schools who will advocate for justice, compassion, and peace as expressed in the Beatitudes of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and articulate a Christianity that speaks and acts for our fragile planet and our most vulnerable citizens.
This two-year-old organization is building a network of school chapters at divinity schools and seminaries across the nation. Chapters are intended to offer students and faculty a forum for shared reflection and action, and provide students with mentoring relationships as they develop their potential for progressive Christian leadership. Chapter activities are determined by each local group of students and cover a wide range of topics and projects, including innovative worship, small group learning, and social justice action.
In addition to the summer fellowships, The Beatitudes Society provides students with resources that complement their graduate theological studies. Scholarships are offered to students to attend conferences that address the intersection of faith and public life, as well as an annual service learning trip to engage in hands-on ministries.
