Linda Parkyn Receives Fulbright Specialists Award

CHICAGO, IL (March 19, 2009) – Linda K. Parkyn, professor of Spanish at North Park University, has been selected for a prestigious Fulbright Specialists project in applied linguistics at the Universidad Nacional de Agricultura in Catacamas, Honduras.

Parkyn is one of more than 400 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad this year through the Fulbright Specialists Program, which provides recipients two- to six- week opportunities to pursue projects that support curricular and faculty development. It was created in 2000 to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program.

In late April and May, Parkyn will work with second-language educators to design an applied linguistics program in English for undergraduate students in the agricultural sciences. The group of 840 aspiring engineers and agronomists hope to contribute to the scientific, technological, and socioeconomic development of Honduran society. Parkyn will assist them by adding English to their academic program of study. 

This is Parkyn’s second Specialist award. She received her first to he Universidad de VeraCruz, in Xalapa, Mexico, in 2003. She was also a Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad de Aguascalientes in Aguascalientes, Mexico, from 2001–2002.
