North Park University Faculty and The Covenant Companion Win Best of Christian Press Awards

CHICAGO, IL (May 31, 2010) – An article by North Park University professor Linda Parkyn (pictured top left) was one of several in an issue of The Covenant Companion that received a Best of Christian Press Award of Excellence (first place) from the Associated Church Press (ACP).

The magazine earned the honor in the “In-Depth Coverage: Magazine” category for its September 2009 issue that focused on immigration. The awards were announced during the ACP’s annual convention, which was held in Washington, D.C., earlier this month. Nearly 200 publications are members of ACP, the oldest religious press association in North America, with a combined readership of several million subscribers.

Four authors contributed articles to the issues. Parkyn, a professor of Spanish, wrote “How Do We Welcome the Newcomer?”

Two North Park Theological Seminary faculty also earned awards: President and Dean John E. Phelan, Jr. (pictured center left) earned an honorable mention for his regular column “Markings”. John Weborg, Professor Emeritus of Theology (pictured bottom left), received an honorable mention for his seasonal article “Reflections on Torture Part III,” which appeared in the December issue.

The Convenant Companion is the monthly magazine of the Evangelical Covenant Church. It examines themes of Christian life, the church, spirituality, issues impacting the Christian community, social justice, and outreach ministry.
