Convocation Recognizes Recently Promoted and Tenured Faculty


CHICAGO, IL (September 20, 2010) North Park University’s fall Academic Convocation recognized faculty members who were recently granted tenure and promotion. These teacher-scholars represent a wide array of disciplines and have demonstrated excellence and promise in their classrooms, research, writing, and community service.

Promoted to Full Professor

Liza Ann Acosta, who joined the University in 2000, was promoted to Professor of English.  Dr. Acosta serves on the North Park Dialogue faculty in addition to teaching courses in the English department. Kathryn Maier-O’ Shea came to North Park University in 1999 as Reference Librarian in the Brandel Library. She was promoted to Professor of Bibliography. Jonathan Rienstra-Kiracofe was promoted to Professor of Chemistry. He has served at NPU since 2007 and has been influential in modernizing the instrumentation in the chemistry labs.

Promoted to Associate Professor

Ilsup Ahn was promoted to Associate Professor of Philosophy.  During the convocation, Ahn was also installed in the Carl I. Lindberg Endowed Chair in Applied Ethics, as Carl I. Lindberg Associate Professor of Philosophy.

Michelle Clifton-Soderstrom was promoted to Associate Professor of Theology and Ethics at North Park Theological Seminary. She was also honored for the recent publication of her book, Angels, Worms and Bogeys: The Christian Ethic of Pietism.

Joel Willitts was promoted to Associate Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies. In addition to his promotion, he was recognized at the convocation for his recently published book, (edited with Michael Bird) Paul and the Gospels: Christologies, Conflicts, and Convergences.

Received Tenure

Rachelle M. Ankney, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics since 2006, received tenure. Ankney previously taught at Roanoke and Dickinson colleges.

Angelyn Balodinas-Bartolomei Associate Professor of Education, received tenure. She has served NPU since 2003 has recently written several articles on Greek American cultural awareness.

Chad Eric Bergman, Professor of Communication Arts and producer of North Park’s theatre program, received tenure. He has been at NPU since 2002. 

Gertrude DeWaters , Associate Professor of Nursing, received tenure. She has served at North Park since 2004. DeWaters is an active nursing practitioner, as well as a scholar.

Alice Gorguis received tenure. She was promoted to Associate Professor of Mathematics in 2009 and has taught at North Park University since 2004.

Bradley Nassif, Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies, who came to NPU in 2004, received tenure.  Dr. Nassif has recently written on the relationship between the eastern orthodox and protestant churches. 

Received Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor

Kristy Odelius received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor of English. Dr Odelius, a poet, joined the North Park faculty in fall 2003. 

Matthew Schau was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor of Biology. He came to North Park from the University of Illinois at Chicago, joining the faculty in 2004.
