The records of the Swedish Engineers' Society of Chicago,
Illinois include administrative records, correspondence, publications,
photos, and newspaper clippings documenting the activities of the
Society. The bulk of the administrative records date from1910 through
1969 and include reports, constitutions and bylaws, membership lists,
yearbooks and general correspondence.
Also included in the Swedish Engineers’ Society Records are
programs of events dating from 1915 through 1970, Ladies’ Auxiliary
programs, speeches presented to the Society and their annual publication
Trasdockan (The Rag Doll). HISTORY:
The Swedish Engineers’ Society of Chicago, Illinois (Svenska
Ingenjörsföreningen i Chicago, Illinois), was founded on 10 October
1908, and incorporated in 1912. The
object of the Society was to promote knowledge, advancement and
cooperation among the technical men of Swedish descent or citizenship
engaged in engineering and industrial operations in Chicago and
vicinity. Between 1913 and 1932, and again in 1946, the Society
published the annual Trasdockan (The Rag Doll), generally issued
in January. In addition, the Society published “Notes” or
“Bulletins.” In 1921 the Society purchased the Dewes Mansion at 503
Wrightwood Avenue, Chicago, which remained their clubhouse until 1974.
The Society dissolved in 1994. PROVENANCE:
Material donated by Carl Hjälmar Lundquist at an unknown date.
Additional material was donated in 1998 from Mr. John Jacobson, and in
1999 from Mr. Reno Ahlgard. ACCESS
