Research Guide: Biblical and Theological Studies
Finding Books :
For students taking classes on campus at North Park University, the easiest way to start finding books is to search the library catalog. (For help in searching the online catalog, see here.)
Often, a subject search will give you more focused information on a topic. To perform a subject search, type a word into the catalog, and then select "Subject" in the box to the right.
Popular sample subject words in the area of theology:
- Church history
- Christianity and justice
- Theology (this is best searched when combined with a century or a place. For example, Theology and 16th century turns up over 100 items)
Many books on this subject can be found on the third floor of the library, but other subject areas will also be helpful.

Finding Database Articles:
Begin by searching the list of databases by subject under your category. If you'd like to try to search them all at once, try the multisearch. Remember to decide if you'd like to search just for books or articles, and to try to narrow your search by picking one area to search (perhaps theology?)
If you'd like to search individual databases, try the following from our Databases A-Z list:
- ATLA is the best database offered to find religious information. It covers a wide range of theological journals, books, and other publications.
- Academic Search Premier indexes many different popular and scholarly sources for religious topics. The current events coverage, which will give you news topics from across the world, might be especially helpful in cross-cultural research.
- JSTOR, a full-text article database, will provide helpful cultural information about different societies as well as also providing archeological information on religious topics.
