Finding Books :

For students taking classes on campus at North Park University, the easiest way to start finding books is to search the library catalog. (For help in searching the online catalog, see here.) Often, a subject search will give you more focused information on a topic. To perform a subject search, type a word into the catalog, and then select "Subject" in the box to the right.

Sample subject terms in the area of health:

  • Transcultural nursing
  • Medical informatics
  • Nursing assessment
  • Community health nursing

Many books on this subject can be found on the second floor of the library, but other subject areas will also be helpful.

Finding Database Articles:

Begin by searching the list of databases by subject under your category. If you'd like to try to search them all at once, try the multisearch. Remember to decide if you'd like to search just for books or articles, and to try to narrow your search by picking one area to search (such as health and nursing).

  • CINAHL indexes over 2800 nursing journals and is a great source for nursing and medical research. Need better instructions about how to search CINAHL?
  • Proquest Nursing Journals offers the full-text of over 250 nursing journals. Click here for help searching Proquest Nursing Journals.
  • Nursing Reference Center: Evidence-based medicine database that offers point-of-care info about drugs, diseases and conditions, and patient education. Click here for more information.
  • Medline is another great medical index. You might want to search this with "nursing" as one of your search terms, as the database also covers dentistry and vetrinary medicine, among others.
