Registration

Registration for LICCD classes through North Park University will be available February 1, 2006.

These courses are offered for graduate credit and for non credit continuing education. Credit is approved through the Mater of Arts in Community Development program, North Park University/SCUPE. You may register as a student-at-large for transfer credit to another institution or use these courses to begin a Master degree program. If you are interested in credit for Eastern University, Wheaton College, Northwest Graduate School, North Park Theological Seminary or SCUPE, please call for further information: 773-244-5643, Carol Ann McGibbon.

Graduate fees $435/semester hour ($1305 per course)

MACD 5110, Faith and Politics:
Understanding Christian Engagement in Politics

Dr. Helene Slessarev-Jamir, Wheaton College
Dates: May 15- May 19, 2006, 9 am - 5 pm

Create a framework for understanding the limitations of government as an instrument of justice. The course will focus on a number of key public policy areas that are of particular importance to urban communities, explore the possibilities of Christian engagement in politics at the national and local levels. We will look at the various political strategies employed by those contemporary Christians who are committed to peace and social justice. Site visits.

  • Develop a framework for understanding Christian civic engagement and a working knowledge of effective local models
  • Gain a working knowledge of several key urban social policy areas

MACD 5950 Restoring the Walls:
Christian Community Development through Housing Initiatives

Dates: May 15 -19, 2006 9 am - 5 pm

Neighborhood restoration through housing is one of the most challenging of all community ministries - especially in declining urban areas. The course will focus on the process and techniques for the creation and implementation of neighborhood housing restoration plans. Chicago neighborhoods and their Christian community development organizations will be emphasized, and students will focus on actual resident-based housing initiatives. Participants will be introduced to the organizations and institutions which support neighborhood housing development, as well as the federal, state, and local programs which fund neighborhood development.

MACD 5510, Christian Faith and Community Development

Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education
Dates: May 22-26, 2006 9 am - 5 pm

This course is intended to give participants an appreciation of the rich resources within a variety of Christian traditions that can form a foundation and rationale for community revitalization.

  • Lay a biblical foundation for understanding Christian involvement in seeking the welfare of the city.
  • Experience practical ways in which different denominations actively integrate their faith with community development through site visits and dialogue.

 

MACD 5330, Christian Community Economic Development

Dates: May 22-26, 2006 9 am - 5 pm

Designed for practitioners wanting to move to the next step of community economic development (ced), this course examines the theory, goals and practice of community economic development and the role of faith and the church in ced. Course held on location at Bethel New Life.

  • Understand low-wealth communities in terms of the “assets” and opportunities; to understand God's abundance rather than society's scarcity approach (Asset based community development)
  • Create an economic development plan for a specific setting in your ministry context.

 

MACD 5320, Wholistic Christian Community Development
Dr. John M Perkins & Dr. Wayne L Gordon
Christian Community Development Association (CCDA)
Dates: May 30 – June 3, 2006 9 am - 5 pm

The course provides a theological foundation for engagement in wholistic community development. Participants will be introduced to the principles and strategies of resident-based community organizing, collaboration and mobilization; the role of the church in community transformation, leadership development and community exegesis; and understanding of the ramifications of institutional racism as an impact on urban communities. Course held on location at Lawndale Community Church .

  • Learn methods and strategies for church based community development, including asset-based approach.
  • Achieve the ability to systematically and intelligently preach, teach and dialogue about the Biblical basis of Christian community development.
