Student/Alumni Summer Team to Lead Worship Around the Country

North Park's Summer Worship Team

CHICAGO, IL (May 9, 2007) – If you've ever experienced worship as part of North Park chapel, collegelife, or even University Ministries' More Than Words We Sing CD released last summer, you understand the power of musically gifted, Spirit-led worship. Experiences like this and the desire to share them beyond the confines of campus inspired the staff and student leadership of University Ministries to form a team of students and alumni to travel the country this summer and minister by leading worship at seven Evangelical Covenant churches.

The team plans to visit the following churches this summer:

Bay Area Christian Connection
Oakland, California
June 2-3

Kingdom Covenant
Miami, Florida
June 8-9

Emerald City Bible Fellowship
Seattle, Washington
June 15-16

New City Church
Birmingham, Alabama
July 7-8

Community Covenant
Calumet Park, Illinois
July 14-15

Relevant Word Cultural Center
Colorado Springs, Colorado
July 21-22

Irvington Covenant Church
Portland, Oregon
July 28-29

Knowing that churches often give regular worship teams a Sunday off during the summer, North Park saw an opportunity to serve local churches and to introduce high school students and other congregants to the University – no trip to Chicago required. The team will be coordinated by one of three University Ministries staff members - Brian Wu, Steve Kelly, or Rich Johnson – while worship itself will be led by one of three student leaders - Sharon Irving, Aubrey Campbell or Jeremiah Sargent.

Host churches will house the North Parkers in homes. Following the worship services, the team will have lunch with youth from the church and share the vision of North Park University in a one-on-one, relaxed setting.

When asked about these upcoming summer plans, Director of University Ministries Rich Johnson shared, "We have some incredibly gifted students who are using their musical and artistic gifts to lead our community in worship. It will be great to bring this on the road to Covenant churches. We hope to be an encouragement to them, as well as to get to know some of the youth in these congregations."

Student worship leader Aubrey Campbell of Crystal Lake, Ill. responded with an enthusiastic "Yes!" when asked to be a part of the team. "Since I've been at North Park, I have come to love and value the unique worship culture here on campus. I have a passion to serve others in a multicultural worship setting and have been able to learn first hand what that looks like through my time as a worship leader on campus." This summer Aubrey looks forward to sharing that passion with the congregations she'll visit, to experiencing even more diverse communities, and to allowing these experiences to continue to shape her as a worshipper. "North Park has something very unique to offer its students, and I think that this summer will be a great opportunity to share that."
