North Park to Host Student Diversity Leadership Conference

Student Diversity Leadership Conference

CHICAGO (October 2, 2009) – North Park University will host the 2009 Student Diversity Leadership Conference on Friday, October 23, from 9:00 am through 12:30 pm at the University’s Anderson Chapel.

The free event will provide students from universities across the Midwest the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to lead diverse campus organizations, increasing their competence for working with a variety of individuals and groups. Students will develop an understanding of their own identity, learn how to discuss and negotiate controversial topics, and prepare to lead groups comprised of different cultures. In addition, they will develop a blueprint for creating their own campus initiative, while cultivating team building and leadership skills.

“This year’s Student Diversity Leadership Conference reinforces our core value of being a multicultural university,” says Dr. Terry Lindsay, conference chair and North Park’s Dean of Diversity and Intercultural Programs. “It will help students develop an understanding and appreciation for human differences, cultural competency and social responsibility.”

The conference will offer a series of presentations addressing various topics, including identity difference, diversity in campus ministries, cross-cultural communication, diverse issues and trends, and conflict management and resolution. It will also feature a Diversity Practitioners Roundtable, which will discuss the key issues affecting diversity in higher education.
