Jay Phelan has served on the Seminary administration and faculty twice, having been the Seminary's dean of students from 1981 to 1986 and beginning service as president and dean of the Seminary in 1996. Phelan received a bachelor of general studies from Trevecca Nazarene College in 1975 and a master of arts from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1977. His doctorate in New Testament is from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary/Northwestern University in 1985. Phelan served as pastor of Coral Springs Covenant Church in Florida from 1986-1988 and as pastor of First Covenant Church in Salina, Kan., from 1988 to 1994. He came to Chicago as executive director of Covenant Publications in 1994, serving until 1996, when he was named president and dean of the Seminary. Phelan was ordained by the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1983 and has served on the denomination's Board of Ministry, the Commission on Pastoral Relations, and the Council of Administrators. He enjoys reading in a variety of fields, including New Testament studies, theology, cultural studies, and mysteries. He and his wife Dawn have two sons, Bryan and Andrew.
