Assistant Professor of Theology and Ethics

Michelle Clifton-Soderstrom came to North Park Theological Seminary in 2003. After having taught a number courses as a part-time instructor for the seminary, Michelle was called to a full time position in theology and ethics in 2006. Michelle attended the seminary, graduating from the MATS program in 1995. She took a year off to study German at the University of Heidelberg, then went to Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary to earn her MTS. She completed her PhD work at Loyola University Chicago, writing in the area of embodiment and theological/philosophical anthropology. During her graduate studies, she also worked in health care contexts with elderly women and persons with disabilities. Michelle is a life-long member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and is ordained to Word and Sacrament. She serves on the ECC’s Christian Action Committee and is active in her local church. She is interested in Christian Social Ethics, has published work in medical and political ethics journals, and is now doing research in the area of German Lutheran Pietism and the ways that they were able to maintain the vital relationship between theology, as faith articulated, and ethics, as faith lived. Michelle’s interests include travel, food, and friends (and sometimes pranks aimed at Richard Carlson). Her husband Karl teaches philosophy and ethics part-time at North Park University, and they have two children.
