Philip J. Anderson received his bachelor of arts from the University
of Minnesota in 1971. He earned his master of divinity from Bethel
Theological
Seminary in 1974 and his Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary
in 1975. He received his doctor of philosophy from Oxford University
(England)
for his work on English Puritanism in 1979. He is ordained by the Evangelical
Covenant Church and joined the faculty at North Park in 1979 as
assistant
professor of church history. Anderson was promoted to associate professor
in 1986 and full professor in 1990. His publications include a
history
of the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, A
Precious Heritage: A Century of Mission in the Northwest, 1884-1984 (1984).
He has edited volumes on Swedish-American Life in Chicago: Cultural
and Urban Aspects of an Immigrant People, 1850-1930 (University
of Illinois Press, 1992) and Swedish-American Life in the Twin Cities
(Minnesota
Historical Society, 2001). Anderson has also edited a collection of
essays by long-time North Park College professor Zenos Hawkinson,
Anatomy
of the Pilgrim Experience: Reflections on Being a Covenanter (Chicago:
Covenant Publications, 2000). Anderson has renovated a cabin on the
north shore of Lake Superior where he and his family spend their summers,
and he recently to restored a 1934 MG P-type sports car.
