Stephen Chester (773) 244-6238
Associate Professor of New Testament
Stephen Chester joined the faculty at North Park in 2006. He had previously taught at International Christian College, Glasgow (Scotland) since 1999. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of York and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the University of Glasgow. His PhD work was also at Glasgow, and his dissertation was published as Conversion at Corinth: Perspectives on Conversion in Paul’s Letters and in the Corinthian Church (T&T Clark, 2003). The focus of his research interests remains Pauline theology, and he is currently engaged in a project exploring Reformation readings of Paul. He is convinced that fruitful interpretation of Scripture for today requires attention to the theological traditions of the church. Chester is an ordained minister of the Church of Scotland and has a particular interest in urban ministry, having been involved at a local level in Glasgow in both the community based housing and credit union movements. His passion in teaching is to equip students to think critically about the interpretation of Scripture in the conviction that true faith does not avoid difficult issues or take refuge in simplistic answers. Instead it grows through wrestling with the text of God’s word.
