Exploring Covenant Affirmations |
The Covenant Affirmations are core beliefs of those in the Covenant faith community. These following six statements describe faith that can contextually be seen in the Preamble of the Evangelical Covenant Church Constitution.
- The centrality of the word of God
- The necessity of new birth
- A commitment to the whole mission of the Church
- The Church as a fellowship of believers
- A conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit
- The reality of freedom in Christ
It is exciting to realize anew the truths of these central beliefs of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Each one is important to personal and public Christian faith. Originally written in 1976, they were reedited and approved by the 2005 Covenant Annual Meeting.
North Park Theological Seminary and the Department of Christian Formation have collaborated to produce Exploring Covenant Affirmations, a resource for Covenant ministries. This project is intended to promote insight and discussion in church, home gatherings, small groups, new member classes, etc regarding the Affirmations.
 A newly produced DVD uses visual images from the Evangelical Covenant Church to illustrate each of the affirmations. Seminary faculty and church leaders present insights for each affirmation that include its role in both the church’s history and current day practice. It fills out some of the depth and richness of each faith affirmation.
Exploring Covenant Affirmations begins with a background segment on the historical common Christian affirmations that serves as an introduction to the six Covenant Affirmations. The DVD then features each Affirmation separately and is designed to be equally accessible to those investigating the Christian faith as well as lifelong Covenant learners. Each chapter is 8-10 minutes in length and includes an introduction to the history and theology behind the featured Affirmation.
The DVD features printable versions of each Covenant Affirmation and the accompanying Participant's and Facilitator's Guides. Additional resources are included on the DVD for those wanting to "go deeper". A 2 1/2 minute introduction and a 15 mini ute overview of this resource are also provided for use in new member classes, worship services, confirmation classes, promotion, etc.
