Street Ministry
Urban Outreach at North Park University this year has partnered with Breakthrough Ministries Friday Night Women’s ministry. Breakthrough has purchased an RV which loads up on Friday nights with volunteers to go out and minister on the streets of the city of Chicago. The program is designed to share the love of Christ and provide a safe sanctuary for women in situations of homelessness, abandonment, addictions, domestic violence, and abuse within the city. Short-term as well as long-term needs are met through relationship building with these women. Many of the women consequently seek additional assistance through the Breakthrough shelter.
Typical Night: Each night is started and led in constant prayer in seeking guidance in words, actions, and praise to God. Every night is different because the team can meet a wide range of individuals with different needs and concerns, but generally this is the typical outline.
· All volunteers and Breakthrough staff meet at the site of the RV for devotions and prayer.
· The team heads out in the RV and parks along a street in a neighborhood that is in need.
· Half of the team will stay at the RV handing out food and talking to those who walk by.
· The other part of the team goes out walking up and down the street, stopping and building relationships with the men and women they come in contact with.
Safety Precautions: Whether at the RV or walking the streets each group is diverse in gender and age. There are always Breakthrough leaders a part of the team, who know the area and people very well.
