Still Deciding?

Choose your major at North Park University.

Don’t worry if you haven't decided on a major: you’re in good company. Many new college students are unsure of what to major in when they begin their freshman year. For these students, choosing a major and a career path while still in high school seems impossible. You, like your peers, are probably interested in a wide range of subjects, or could imagine being happy in careers that range from teaching to medicine to creative writing or beyond. Focusing your interests and choosing a major is a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. We’re here to help.

North Park University is a great place to explore your interests and get advising as you process your decisions. Our core curriculum program is designed to give you a taste of courses across the University, and Voyage—our first-year experience—will get you involved in community life and extracurricular activities that can help you discover what you’re passionate about doing. We’ll also pair you with a faculty advisor from day one who will walk alongside you as you process your experiences and figure out what you’d like to study.

All students enter North Park as “undeclared” majors—we don’t let you make a formal major declaration until after at least one semester—but we do suggest that you declare a major by the end of your first year. Don’t forget, though: you’re not locked in. You can change your mind.

Let yourself dream—and let us help you.

Deciding on a major requires some self-reflection and imagination. You may also find helpful advice through talking with your faculty advisor, someone in the Career Development and Internships Office, or the staff of Student Enrichment Services and Support. Here are some suggestions to get your started:

Do a self-assessment.

  • Make a list of your skills, hobbies, dreams, and things and people that inspire you.
  • Think about what motivates you.
  • Think about ways you’d like to be of service to others.
  • Imagine yourself doing the unimaginable: from public speaking to flying to discovering a medical breakthrough. Someone has to do it; why not you?
