Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students in the School of Professional Studies (SPS) to earn credit for learning gained outside traditional academic settings, such as life experience, professional training, certifications, or licensure.

CPL project requirements

  • CPL projects should align with North Park’s courses or topics.
  • CPL typically fulfills elective credits or some general education requirements.
  • CPL credits cannot duplicate transfer credits or credits earned at North Park.
  • CPL is available only to currently enrolled SPS students.
  • Credit is awarded based on demonstrated learning, not the experience itself. The format for your submission will depend on the type of experience.

The SPS CPL coordinator will guide you through the process once you’re enrolled. Your admission counselor can answer questions during the application process.

Types of CPL projects

  • Advanced Placement (AP) and military credits: Students with AP credits or military service can submit official transcripts to earn credit.
  • Credit by essay: Demonstrate learning through an experiential essay that connects concrete experiences to broader theories or concepts.
  • Credit by examination: You can use the College-Level Examination Program and other exams (including foreign language ones) to earn CPL credit. North Park does not approve all exams; consult your advisor for details.
  • License or certificate: Earn CPL credit through professional training, certifications, or workshops.

CPL procedures

  1. Meet with the CPL coordinator to discuss potential topics.
  2. Choose the CPL type and determine the number of credit hours to petition.
  3. The coordinator connects you with a faculty evaluator.
  4. Complete the CPL project independently.
  5. Submit the final draft to the CPL coordinator.
  6. The faculty evaluator reviews and decides the credit award, potentially requesting revisions.
  7. Pay the CPL fees, and the Office of the Registrar adds the credit to your transcript.
