The F.M. Johnson Archives and Special Collections relies on generous donations to expand its collections. We welcome inquiries about donating materials relevant to our focus areas, including:

  • Official records of North Park University and the Evangelical Covenant Church
  • Records from Chicago-area businesses, clubs, and organizations tied to the Swedish-American community
  • Personal papers of individuals involved in these institutions

If you wish to donate, please contact the archivist. Donations are accepted only after consultation with staff and completion of the required forms.

Record transfers

We also acquire records through regular transfers from North Park University and the Evangelical Covenant Church. We are particularly interested in records of lasting historical value, such as:

  • Correspondence, memos, and subject files documenting projects, activities, and functions
  • Meeting minutes and reports
  • Files on policies, decisions, committees, and task forces
  • Publications
  • Audiovisual materials, including photographs and recordings

Collection development policies

Covenant Archives and Historical Library

  • Mission
    The mission of the Covenant Archives, including the North Park University Archives, is to support the Evangelical Covenant Church and North Park University by identifying, collecting, preserving, and providing access to records of lasting value. These collections serve the church, university, and the public.
  • Statement of authority
    Established in 1935 by the Evangelical Covenant Church, the Archives has been housed at North Park since 1953. The denomination retains ownership of the materials, and the Archives is administered by the university library.
  • Collection guidelines
    The Archives collects all relevant records, regardless of format, to support the church and university’s missions. Records include:

    • Administrative records of church departments, boards, and commissions
    • Personal papers of leaders, clergy, and missionaries
    • Publications authored by or related to the Evangelical Covenant Church
    • We do not collect materials related to the Covenant Church of Sweden or Norway, non-Covenant organizations, or artifacts (except on a case-by-case basis).

North Park University Archives

  • Mission
    The North Park University Archives supports the activities of North Park University and the Evangelical Covenant Church by preserving and providing access to records that document the history of the university.
  • Authority
    The North Park University Archives is part of the Covenant Archives, and its records are governed by the same policies.
  • Collection guidelines
    The Archives collects:

    • Records of Chicago-area Swedish-American organizations and businesses
    • Personal papers of Swedish-Americans in the region
    • Primary source materials on the Swedish immigrant experience in Chicago
    • Publications (Swedish and English) related to the Swedish-American community
  • Materials outside this scope, including records of Swedish-Americans in other regions or general immigrant experiences, will generally not be accepted. Artifacts are considered on a case-by-case basis.
