Sportsmanship
Respect for players, officials, and staff is essential. Teams are rated on conduct each game. Poor sportsmanship can lead to disqualification or suspension.
How Conduct is Scored
After each game, officials rate teams on a 0–4 point scale based on player behavior, sportsmanship, and team attitude. These scores matter—they impact your eligibility for playoffs and future games.
Here’s how the scoring works:
- 4 – Excellent: Teams show full respect for officials, opponents, and teammates. Captains lead calmly and keep everyone in check.
- 3 – Good: Minor complaints may occur, but overall behavior is respectful. A team with a technical foul can’t score higher than a 3.
- 2 – Average: Some verbal dissent or multiple technical fouls. Captains maintain basic control, but there are signs of poor sportsmanship.
- 1 – Below Average: Ongoing disrespect toward officials or opponents. Little to no control from the captain. Ejected players = max score of 1.
- 0 – Unacceptable: Serious misconduct such as fighting, threats, or causing a game to be forfeited. Teams receiving a 0 risk being removed from the league.
General discipline policy
Everyone who participates in IM sports or uses Helwig Recreation Center is expected to follow all rules and treat others with respect. Misconduct—on or off the court—has consequences.
Disciplinary actions are progressive:
- First offense: Verbal warning and written documentation.
- Second offense: Another warning and a required meeting with the IM Director. You’ll be asked to leave for the rest of the day and lose access to Helwig.
- Third offense: Loss of IM and Helwig privileges for the rest of the semester. The issue will be reported to campus authorities.
Serious or repeated misconduct, such as fighting, abusive language, or threatening behavior, can lead to immediate suspension and potential removal from the IM program.
