Catalyst Semester is a unique, hands-on learning community where students engage with Chicago through coursework, service, and real-world experiences.
What you’ll do
Take Chicago-focused courses
Join a cohort of students and take two or more classes together, designed to explore urban issues from multiple academic perspectives.
Serve in a practicum
Gain valuable experience by working with a Chicago-based nonprofit, ministry, business, or community organization doing meaningful work.
Explore the city on Catalyst Wednesdays
Every other Wednesday afternoon (11:40 a.m.–4:10 p.m.), your cohort will venture into the city. Activities include neighborhood tours, museums, local restaurants, and conversations with community leaders. You’ll connect classroom concepts with real-world settings, deepening your understanding of the city and yourself.

Who Can Join
- Returning students: Must have at least a 2.5 GPA
- First-year students: May enroll in one cohort during the fall semester

No additional fee. As long as you’re registered for at least 15 credit hours, your financial aid remains unchanged.
Yes! Catalyst is designed for both commuter and residential students. Most activities take place during daytime hours.

No. Catalyst Semester courses fulfill General Education requirements. As long as you haven’t already completed the courses offered, you’ll stay on track.
