Featured paired courses

Paired courses are a unique characteristic of the biblical and theological studies major, providing continuity in content, reading, and writing. Through the paired coursework of “Jesus and the Marginalized: Jesus and the Gospels” and “Christ in Global Context: Christology,” students explore Jesus’ personhood and interactions with those He encountered as depicted in the Gospels, as well as how He is worshipped and portrayed by global communities of faith today.

BTS 2210 – Jesus and the Marginalized: Jesus and the Gospels
An investigation of the life, teachings, and passion of Jesus in their Jewish and Roman contexts, with special attention to his moral vision, the policies of the kingdom of God, and his solidarity with the oppressed. The course engages contemporary voices to assess the continuing significance of Jesus for faith and justice today.

BTS 2215 – Christ in Global Context: Christology
This course examines understandings and interpretations of Christ across various non-Western contexts, drawing on texts in theology and literature and on data from the social sciences. This course will also examine the theory of contextual theology and explore various models of Christian inculturation. It asks students to consider the ethical implications of these models in light of postcolonial critiques.

At North Park I’ve expanded my mind to different things that the world offers, whether it be social justice issues, Christian ethics, or just being able to relate in the real world.
