Scandinavian Studies at North Park
Immerse yourself in Scandinavian culture through language study, study abroad opportunities, and cultural engagement. This minor equips you with global perspectives and critical thinking skills, preparing you for careers in education, business, and nonprofits—both in the US and abroad.
Experience Scandinavian life firsthand by studying in Norway, Finland, Denmark, or Sweden, including the 50-year-old Södra Vätterbygdens Folkhögskola (SVF) College Line program in Jönköping, Sweden, the longest-running US-Sweden exchange. Closer to campus, Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood—home to the Swedish American Museum—offers internships, field trips, and cultural events.

SCAN 2130–Scandinavian History and Culture
Course offered in English. Scandinavia’s role in European development. The Viking age, the medieval period, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, the modern breakthrough, nineteenth century migration, emergence of the modern democracies, and the “Welfare State.”
Minor requirements
- 20 semester hours
This minor must be paired with a major to fulfill graduation requirements.
Center for Scandinavian Studies
Endowed by the Hugo A. Anderson Chair in Scandinavian Studies in 1982 and created in 1984, the Center for Scandinavian Studies (CSS) at North Park University has firmly established itself as a major focal point for Scandinavian academic and cultural interests in Chicago. The CSS sponsors visiting professors, lectures, concerts, and exhibits, bringing many talented and accomplished Scandinavians to the city of Chicago. Dr. Chad Eric Bergman, professor of theatre, serves as the director for the center.
