Actuarial Science at North Park


Actuarial science combines mathematics and statistics to assess and manage risk, ranking among the top careers in the Jobs Rated Almanac for being highly sought after and well-compensated. North Park’s actuarial science certificate is designed for math, business, and economics majors preparing for careers in actuarial science, statistics, business, or economics, with opportunities in industries such as insurance, banking, technology, and education. Through our interdisciplinary approach, you’ll develop essential skills like communication, collaboration, and problem-solving, while small classes and dedicated professors help you prepare for the first professional actuarial exam and connect you with actuarial firms.

MATH 3050–Vector Calculus
A detailed study of functions of several variables including differentiation, line and surface integrals, and Green and Stokes’ theorems. Uses computers.

Certificate requirements


The certificate requires 24 credits, with some requirements potentially fulfilled by transfer credits. Students must also complete the full major requirements to graduate from North Park and receive the certificate. The classes listed below are mandatory for all students and should be taken in the order listed, due to prerequisites:

  • STAT 1490 – Introductory Statistics (4 sh) Prerequisite: MATH 1005 or MATH 1010
  • MATH 1510 – Calculus I (4 sh) Prerequisite: MATH 1150 or Math placement test
  • MATH 1520 – Calculus II (4 sh) Prerequisite: MATH 1510
  • MATH 3050 – Vector Calculus (4 sh) Prerequisite: 1520
  • MATH 3150 – Statistical Theory (4 sh) [Prerequisite: MATH 1520 and STAT 1490
  • MATH 4970 – Internship (4 sh) Prerequisite: MATH 3050 and MATH 3150
