The Adelaide Ensemble: Baroque Hurdy Gurdy Concert

The Adelaide Ensemble is named after Princess Adelaide, daughter of King Louis XV of France and avid player of the vielle à roue (hurdy gurdy): from about 1720–70, the hurdy gurdy enjoyed immense popularity in France. Many aristocrat —particularly women—learned to play the instrument for their own enjoyment and personal enrichment, as well as providing live music for members of court. The Adelaide Ensemble performs this unique and long-forgotten repertoire, bringing the hurdy gurdy and a rich tradition of music-making back to life.
