POLI 2400 Introduction to Public Policy
An introduction to U.S. domestic public policy: its contours, actors, and effects. This course will consider federal education, environment, health care, social welfare, and tax policies. By the end of the course, students will appreciate the breadth of public policy with a better understanding of “where the money goes” in federal spending. They will also be able to read, write, and evaluate the arguments in the various forms of policy proposals.
Career outcomes and internships
Public policy graduates pursue diverse paths, including:
- Civil service at federal, state, or local levels.
- Private sector roles in nonprofits or government-affiliated organizations.
- Advanced degrees in public administration, policy, or law.
Internships are strongly encouraged, and North Park University has partnerships with many organizations, including:
- State of Illinois’ Office of the Governor
- State of Illinois’ Treasurer’s Office
- City of Chicago’s Office of the Mayor and Department of Housing
- D.C.-based interest groups, including World Vision and the International Justice Mission
Wherever you want to make a difference, you’re going to run into a government. Even if you want to change something through a community organization, you can’t do it without dealing with the government, so learn how the system works.
