Head Men's Soccer Coach
At North Park since: 1999
John Born came to North Park University as the head men's soccer coach and transformed the program into a team with more than a dozen consecutive winning seasons and consistent regional and national rankings. He’s now bringing that drive to the development of a new sports management concentration in the School of Business and Nonprofit Management.
After playing collegiate soccer at Concordia University, Born went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Richmond. He has used this training to successfully lead sports programs and coach at the club, high school, and college levels, as well as to serve as an Associate Athletic Director at North Park. In developing this new concentration, Born is using his expertise and experience to help the University respond to student interest in this growing and diverse field of business management. He sees North Park as being the perfect place to start this program: located in a big sports city with an excellent School of Business teaching at the undergraduate level. “We’ll take advantage of our location, with numerous guest speakers, volunteer opportunities, and internships with local professional and amateur organizations, and nonprofit agencies,” Born said. “This is not just a classroom program.”
Born also continues in his role as the head men’s soccer coach with teams that consistently earn top honors in conference standings and in the classroom. Under his direction, the program has had 14 consecutive winning seasons, captured four CCIW titles, achieved regional rankings from 2001 to 2011, and was ranked nationally from 2005 to 2011. For six of the past seven years, the National Soccer Coaches Association has also recognized and honored North Park with the “Team Academic Award,” given to athletic teams that have a cumulative grade point average over 3.0.
