Psychology at North Park

The North Park University Psychology Department provides students with the opportunity to pursue two different degrees: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. The Bachelor of Arts degree is a traditional, Liberal of Arts Bachelors degree, while the Bachelor of Science is more rigorous, requiring additional coursework, an internship, and a portfolio.  The psychology curriculum covers all the major areas in the field and focuses on the application of psychology as a science and a profession. A degree in psychology prepares students for entry-level jobs in a variety of fields, such as counseling, advertising, community relations, advocacy, market research, and teaching, as well as equips students to continue their studies in graduate school.

Mission

The mission of the psychology major is to prepare its students for lives of significance, intellectual growth, and service through the science and profession of psychology—lives marked by an understanding of the complexity of behavior, informed about its biological, cognitive, developmental, social, and cultural dimensions; and by the use of empirical methods, interpretive skills, and faith, in the application of knowledge for human well-being.

Upon completion of a psychology major, the graduate will be able to...

  1. describe one’s own conceptualization and experience of contemporary psychology as both science and profession.
  2. apply the scientific method in theoretical reasoning, critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving.
