With more than 20 years of experience working in the mental health field, including private practice, community mental health, and teaching in higher education, Dr. Martha Mason is passionate about helping people as well as training the next generation of counselors.
“I have a deep respect and appreciation for each person’s ‘humanness’ and what makes them unique. Life is challenging, and if I can walk with someone on their journey to ease their burdens a bit, that is what I want to do,” she says.
Mason recognizes that students learn in different ways and takes a diverse approach to teaching with a focus on incorporating hands-on, real-world activities. Using Chicago as a classroom, she encourages students to engage with community members through psychoeducation workshops, experiential groups, and one-on-one counseling activities.
Through the intimate environment and supportive community at North Park, Mason enjoys interacting with students, saying, “I look forward to getting students excited about counseling and all of the opportunities it holds for them.”
