Division of Student Engagement

Responsibilities

In order to provide reasonable accommodations and support for students in all programs at North Park University, the University and students must work together and maintain the following responsibilities.

Students

  • A student will identify him/herself as a student with a disability and in need of accommodations. Traditional undergraduate students should contact the Division of Student Engagement; all other students must notify their program director. This notification must be given at least two weeks in advance of any needed accommodations or services. Depending on the nature of the program, service, or activity, accommodations may take longer or be able to be coordinated in less time.
  • The student must provide information about their disability and the necessity for accommodations. Helpful documentation supportive of this request includes medical records, psycho-educational testing, and school records.
  • A student must meet with a member of the Division of Student Engagement and/or their program director each semester so that their case may be reviewed and reasonable accommodations determined. Reasonable accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • A student will adhere to course content, academic standards, policies, and procedures set forth by the professor, department, and/or University, as all students are required to follow.
  • A student will meet with his/her individual professor to discuss their learning needs and the specific accommodations needed during the course.
  • A student must notify the Division of Student Engagement and/or their program director if the accommodations and services are not effective.

North Park University

  • The responsibility for accommodations and support at North Park will be carried out through the Division of Student Engagement for traditional undergraduate students. All other students will work with their program director. The disability access specialist and/or the program director will enlist other departments and/or people as needed to help meet the determined reasonable accommodations.
  • The disability access specialist and/or program director will be an advocate and liaison for the student.
  • The disability access specialist and/or program director will notify a student’s professor of the reasonable accommodations for the student to succeed in the course. This is done on a semester-by-semester basis through accommodation letters.
  • The disability access specialist and/or program director will make every attempt to provide reasonable accommodations for students needing learning assistance, who have the appropriate documentation.
  • The disability access specialist and/or program director may deny a request for accommodations if the student does not identify a disability according to Section 504/ADA, fails to verify the need for the requested services, or information is not provided in a timely manner.
  • The disability access specialist and/or program director may refuse to provide any accommodation that is inappropriate or unreasonable, including any that pose a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual requesting the accommodation or of others; constitute a fundamental change or alteration of an essential element of a course or program; or pose undue financial or administrative burden on the institution.
